German sculptor Hermann Geibel studied sculpturing and drawing in Dresden and München. During the World War I, he was severely wounded and then had to work mainly with his left arm. Until 1934 he lived in München, was a member of the local Secession and worked as a freelance sculptor. He later became a professor of the Department of Applied Plastic and Freehand Drawings at the Technical High School (TH) Darmstadt and created mainly figural and animal sculptures. Between the wars he made numerous trips to Southern Europe. In 1946-47 he produced the first draft of the logo of the TH Darmstadt, the head of Athena. After the war, his style developed into stronger abstraction. After retiring he worked again as a freelancer. The 70 cm high bronze statuette “Fight break” probably dates back to 1928. In this year, it was already shown as a “Young Boxer” in the Munich Art Exhibition in the Glass Palace. According to the catalog of the art competitions it was produced in the years 1931/33.
