Alexander Posch was a German painter of Austrian descent who mainly of still lifes from fruits, flowers, and potteries. He was trained as a glass artist and attended a private painting school in Darmstadt. From 1910 he studied in München and Wien and was considered one of the most important artists in Darmstadt after World War I. In 1920 he was one of the co-founders of the artist group “Posch-Pfeil-Richter” which was later renamed to “Darmstadt Group” and was close to the New Objectivity. In 1931 he was awarded the prestigious “Georg-Büchner-Preis” by the then People’s State of Hessen.
Posch was instrumental in founding the “Reichsverband bildender Künstler Hessens”, acting as its managing director, and organizing important exhibitions in Darmstadt. In 1944, he lost his wife in a night of fire. In addition, his studio and large parts of his artistic work were destroyed. After two years in the Allgäu region, he returned to Darmstadt after the war and became a member of the Hessen Art Association” and the “New Darmstadt Secession”. His son Claudius (1947-2013) also became a well-known painter and graphic artist in Darmstadt.
