After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and his military service, Ludwig Waldschmidt studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in München. In 1922 he co-founded the Palatine Association of Artists. From 1924, he worked as a painter and graphic artist, first in Frankfurt and then in Berlin. After 1935 he was no longer allowed to exhibit considered as a “degenerate” artist. In 1948 he returned to Kaiserslautern where he was among the best-known regional expressionists. Waldschmidt mainly painted farmers, industrial workers, and landscapes.
