Paul Wolf

Paul Wolf was a German architect and city planner, and worked as a city planner in Dresden from 1922-45. He studied architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart and subsequently assumed positions in Katowice, Wilhelmshaven, Berlin-Schöneberg and Hannover. After World War II, he was employed as an urban planner for the reconstruction of East Berlin. Wolf also planned and designed several urban planning projects for the totally destroyed town of Dresden, but they were not all realized. He was active in times of completely contradictory eras, between Historicism and New Modern Architecture.

Wolf’s 1928 entry entitled Proposal for the enhancement of the arena in Dresden referred to the building of a sports complex on the site of old sports fields. The arena, later known, amongst others, as Ilgen-Arena and Rudolf-Harbig-Stadium, was opened in 1923 with a capacity of 24,000 spectators and reconstructed after World War II. The second major venue next to the stadium was the Georg-Arnhold-Bath, completed in 1926. The stadium was demolished in 2007 after several renovations and replaced by a new complex.
