Biography

Indian artist K. S. Kulkarni studied at the School of Arts in Bombay. A prolific painter, Kulkarni used many different mediums, including sculpture, ceramics, mosaic and textile design, exploring all styles, especially Eastern and Western artistic traditions. He was innovative in combining abstract and figurative painting in a diverse way. As a teacher, he worked as a professor in various Indian colleges and as a visiting professor in the United States. In 1948 Kulkarni participated in the London Art Competitions and founded the Triveni Kala Sangam cultural complex in New Delhi, where he served as Director of the Art Department until 1968. In 1955, he was awarded the first of his three national awards, and in 1958 he traveled through Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Brazil. There he came into contact with the Mayan and Inca civilizations, which had an important influence in his work. He was also politically active and a minister in the 1980s. Kabaddi, the title of his submitted water color, is an Indian team contact sport that is also part of the Asian Games.

Many sources give 1916 as YOB. However, https://www.indiatoday.in/magazine/signposts/story/19941115-ustad-asad-ali-khan-gets-tansen-samman-809953-1994-11-15 in a short obit states that he died at age 76, which would imply that he was born in 1918.
