James Humbert Craig became a self-taught painter, as he failed to see the term through at the Belfast School of Art. He painted mostly Irish landscapes, and had a Northern Irish father with Alexander Craig, a tea merchant, and a Swiss mother with Maria Mentelen, who came from a family of painters. His job as a landscape painter was to reflect nature as it was. He painted in Switzerland, in the south of France and in northern Spain. Craig painted a number of views of the River Dun in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. None of them, however, could be identified as the submitted work After a Fresh on the Dun River.
