Amleto Cataldi was the son of a wood carver and studied at the Libera Scuola in Roma. In 1907 he became professor of decorative sculpturing at the Istituto di San Michele. In 1923 he became a member of the Accademia Albertina in Torino. Cataldi initially focused primarily on religious and literary topics. Later he developed his own kind of neoclassicism, but he also created busts of famous personalities and nobles of his time. He was a well-known sculptor whose greatest times were the 1920s and 1930s. He is remembered as a great but forgotten sculptor of these times. As many of the sculptors of his time he was influenced by Auguste Rodin.
La Corsa is one of four approximately 2.5 m large bronze groups that represent the sports of running, boxing, soccer and wrestling. They were placed on pillars of the stadium on the Foro Mussolini in 1929. The stadium was demolished in 1957. At the beginning of the 21st century, the sculptures were restored and re-erected in the area of the former Olympic Village in Roma.
