Taking part in his second Olympics at Innsbruck in 1964, speed skater Terry Malkin finished eighth out of 33 starters in the 10,000 metres. It was the best performance by a British speed skater at the Winter Olympics, and it was not until Cornelius Kersten ranked ninth in the 1,000 metres at Beijing in 2022 that anybody came close to bettering his performance. Eleven days after the 1964 Games, Malkin beat the Swedish 10,000 metres gold medallist Jonny Nilsson in a 3000 metres event at Flipistad, Sweden.
Malkin took part in three World Speed Skating Allround Championships in 1959-60 and 1964, and four European Speed skating championships in 1960 and 1962-64, with a best finish of 11th in the 1964 Europeans at Oslo. He was living in Norway at the time, and set British records in three of the four events he entered at those Championships. Malkin started seniors speed skating in 1970.
Personal Bests: 500 – 42.6 (1964); 1500 – 2:12.8 (1964); 5000 – 7:57.1 (1964); 10000 – 16:30.1 (1964).
