Luigi and his sister Dina Velluti (1910-1977) came from a family of artists in Venezia. During World War II, his studio was a center of resistance against the Fascists. Even before the war he had only a modest success as a sculptor, while after the war he no longer worked as an artist. Luigi Velluti was a close friend of Francesco Messina.
