The Japanese painter Shogo Taguchi graduated in 1921 from the Tokyo Art School and became a student of Sōtarō Yasui, who developed the yōga (Western) style of portrait painting. With the painting Roses he was awarded a first prize and with Fisherman’s Daughter he was accepted for the 10th Nika Exhibition. In 1928, he was a co-founder of the Western Painting Association. Beginning in 1929 Taguchi studied in France for several years. In 1932 he was invited to join the Nika-kai group of mainly fauvist style painters. Two years later, he traveled to Manchuria with Tsuguharu Fujita, who was also a Nika member.His father Kikutei Taguchi was a novelist, playwright and art critic and his son Yuichi Takai also became a famous writer.
