Educated as a sculptor, Co Derr studied under greats such as Gerrit Rietveld and Le Corbusier in Amsterdam. He worked mostly with glass, but also produced other objects. Moving to Sweden in 1950, he eventually became art & craftmanship curator at the Stockholm Culture House. In the last years of his life, he again dedicated himself to creating objects himself.
Derr was greatly fascinated by the anatomy of birds, which occupied him throughout his career. He created numerous bird sculptures, mostly made of glass, which were characterized by a high degree of abstraction, but were still recognizable as birds. His Skater is a figure carved from linden wood, which is shown in the art catalog.
