Jan Strube, who was educated in Amsterdam, was considered a New Realist painter. He was active in Breda, and painted carefully chosen subjects from his immediate surroundings: sun-drenched views of the Brabant landscape, houses, genre scenes of cattle markets or bakers at work and still lifes, always rendered with great precision and realism. Strube’s paintings were known for their humorous and cheerful quality, despite their sometimes mysterious and otherworldly aura and the even light.
