Ansgar Almquist was trained as an ornamental sculptor. He studied in 1908 in Stockholm, but could not finish his studies for economic reasons. In 1909 he continued his studies in Gothenburg under Wilhelmson and then he went to Paris and attended the Colarossi Academy and the École des beaux-arts de Paris under Jean-Antoine Injalbert. In 1921 he travelled to France, England and Germany. Later, he was a teacher at the High School for Industrial Arts (1931-38) and the Stockholm Art School, both in Stockholm (1945-55). Almquist created mostly reliefs and bronze sculptures for public assignments. His works included realistic single figures and groups, nudes, portraits, and decorative works in bronze and terracotta in a certain acerbity. According to the 1936 exhibition catalog, his life-size bronze sculpture Gångaren (Race Walker) was also created in the same year. In 1947, it was erected in front of the sports hall in Tidaholm.
