Frane Cota was a Croatian architect and sculptor and one of the most important Croatian artists between the two World Wars. He studied sculpturing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wien (Vienna) and architecture in Zagreb. Initially working as an architect, he was a professor at the Architectural Faculty of the University of Zagreb from 1934-50. He also taught at the College of Education, beginning in 1938. His sculptures ranged from the Vienna Secession to Neo-Classicism. The characteristics of his work were reduced shapes and a floating modeling of the surfaces. He also produced monuments, medals and designed coins. As an architect he was a member of the school of Zagreb Functionalism, which counts among its members the outstanding personalities of Croatian architecture between the two Great Wars. As a sculptor, he linked the Vienna Secession and Neoclassicism in the group of the Zagreb spring salon.
