Hungarian author and writer József Kucharik was educated as a teacher and also worked as a fencing master. He started his teaching career in 1909 in Miskolc at the Royal Catholic School. Under the Soviets he was considered to be a criminal and was sentenced to jail for two months. Kucharik later worked as a fencing master in various cities, notably from 1932-45 in Budapest. He wrote several books on physical education in the 1930s and taught among others the well-known wrestler Károly Kárpáti.
