Biography

Charles Stanier was the son of a glass-blower and a glass-making instructor at the School of Art at Stourbridge, a center of glass making in the UK in the 19th and 20th century. His son William (1919-2010) later became a famous designer and glass-engraver. Charles entered the sculpture competition at the 1948 London Olympics. He was a fine craftsman and an active trade unionist helping to form the Union of Glassworkers and Kindred Trades in 1919. Due to his reputation, the famous glass factory of Stuart & Sons used him in their adverts. Awarded the MBE in 1948, Stanier died in 1956, just one month after retiring from the post of general secretary of the National Union of Flint Glassworkers.
