Biography

Kálmán Kirchhofer was of Danube Swabian descent and attended a school in the now Slovakian part of the Hungarian Kingdom, where he started competing as a gymnast. He started his career in athletics with the Debreceni Torna Egyletnél (DTE). Kirchhofer graduated from law school and – while working as a trainee lawyer in Nyíregyháza – he joined the local Gymnastics and Fencing Club (NyTVE). It was during this time that he won the 1907 Hungarian Championship in the shot put, his only podium at the national championships. In the following year, he was entered to compete at the 1908 London Olympics but did not start. In addition to the spot put, Kirchhofer was also active in other throwing and jumping events (discus, javelin, high jump). He was entered again for the 1912 Olympic Games but again failed to compete.

Kirchhofer settled in Nyírbátor and ran a lawyer’s office. In World War I, served in the Austro-Hungarian Army. He was wounded and eventually discharged as an artillery captain. He continued to compete, then again in the colours of DTE, until 1926. After a long illness, he died of cancer. After his death, his widow donated a challenge cup which was awarded by DTE to the best shot putter.
