Hugo Ahrén represented IFK Karlstad when he was entered to compete in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. He withdrew, however, just before the opening ceremony due to the recent death of his father. On national level, he was active in high hurdles, short relay, high jump and javelin throw. As an official, he was the first Secretary of the Värmland Sports Association and, from 1908, board member of the Swedish Sports Association.
Ahrén attended the gymnasium in his hometown Karlstad. He was a correspondent for the Swedish Ministry of Social Affairs and worked as a commercial agent and moved to Stockholm in 1917. He was married to a female hotel owner in Göteborg, though the marriage later ended in divorce. Later, his profession is reported as merchant. Ahrén died in a hospital from myocarditis and blood poisoning.
