Helmer Måhl competed in high jump, long jump, and pole vault but specialised in standing jumps. He started his athletic career in 1907 representing IFK Kristinehamn. In 1911 he joined Västerås SK and one year later IFK Västerås. Måhl won two consecutive gold medals in the standing high jump in 1911 and 1912 and added a silver in 1913. At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm Måhl only jumped 1.30 m in the qualification and was eliminated. He is said to have injured himself in training just before the Olympics.
Måhl was a civil engineer. He got divorced in 1937.
