German half-heavyweight judoka Daniel Gürschner lost his first-round bout to Brazilian Mário Sabino Júnior at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was eliminated in the pool stage. In 1998 Gürschner won the European Championships and in 2000 was silver medallist. In 1996 and 2002, he also won the German national title. Gürschner turned to coaching after his active career and became chief national coach of the German Under23 national team in 2021.
