Yevgeny Chen was the grandson of Eugene Chen, an important figure in Chinese foreign affairs prior to World War II. Yevgeny took up track and field athletics as a teenager and won Soviet titles in the long and triple jump in 1953, 1957, and 1960. He was a member of the national team from 1954 through 1962 and was selected to represent the USSR in the triple jump at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, but did not start the event. Following his retirement from active competition, he worked as a coach, sports journalist, and television commentator. His daughter Yolanda was a successful international long and triple jumper during the 1980s and 1990s, setting a world indoor record in the triple jump and winning the 1995 World Indoor Championships.
