Biography

Argentine track and field athlete Ángel Carlos Gagliano was a specialist in the triple jump, but also competed in the long jump and sprint events. Gagliano began competing at international competitions in the early 1970s, which saw him finish eighth in the triple jump at the 1971 South American Championships. Four years later, he just missed out on a medal at the Championships when he finished fourth with a jump of 15.07 metres. He finally won his first medal at the Championships in 1977, jumping 15.15 metres to win silver.

In 1978 Gagliano won three medals at the Southern Cross Games in La Paz, Bolivia, with silver in the triple jump and 4 × 400 metres relay, and bronze in the 4 × 100 metres relay. He continued his good form as part of the Argentine relay quartet at the 1979 South American Championships with silver in the 4 × 400 metres and bronze in the 4 × 100 metres. Gagliano then won bronze in the 4 × 400 metres relay and the triple jump at the 1981 South American Championships, followed by silver in the triple jump at the 1982 Southern Cross Games.

With his consistent performances Gagliano earned himself a place on the Argentine Olympic team for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At the Games he was scheduled to compete in the triple jump but had the misfortune to injure himself during practice in the Olympic stadium and therefore did not start. After his sporting career Gagliano became a university professor in Argentina.
