At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, German sailor Wibke Bülle partnered Nicola Birkner in the two-person keelboat (470) but only placed fifth, despite being one of the favourites. They lost the silver medal after finishing 15th in the last race. At World Championships they won a silver medal in 1997 and two bronzes in, 1996 and 1998.
Bülle started her sports career in the former East Germany as a rower but moved to sailing in 1986. She partnered non-Olympian Susanne Peters and became European Championships runner-up in 1989 and a bronze medallist in 1993. She was also a bronze medallist at the 1991 Worlds. At the beginning of the 2000s, Bülle partnered Ulrike Schümann and non-Olympian Winnie Lippert in the Yngling class. The crew won silver medals at both the 2002 and 2003 World Championships. Nevertheless, they failed to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Bülle was a trained physiotherapist but later became a graduated business administrator working with Lufthansa.
