Biography

José de Armas was a Venezuelan tennis player who played professionally during the 1990s and 2000s. De Armas achieved a career-best singles ranking of #236 in the world in May 2003 and a doubles ranking of #231 in the world in August 2000. In the late 1990s he won two Junior Grand Slam doubles titles at the French Open, the first with Luis Horna (PER) in 1997 and the second with Fernando González (CHI) in 1998. Between 1999 and 2009 De Armas won 22 singles and 10 doubles titles on the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures circuit.

In 2000 De Armas and Jimy Szymanski represented Venezuela in the doubles at the Sydney Olympics. They won their opening match before losing to the eventual gold medallists of Sébastien Lareau and Daniel Nestor in the second round. De Armas had some success at major international sports events, winning bronze in the singles at the 2003 Pan American Games, before winning gold in the doubles and silver in the mixed doubles at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
