Biography

José Perurena competed at the 1968 Olympics as a canoeist in the K4 event. He was a Spanish national champion several times in kayak and competed internationally for many years. A computer technician, he later became director of the IT Departent at Saint-Gobain in Spain.

In sports administration Perurena was Chairman of the Athletes’ Commission of the Spanish Olympic Committee (1992-94), and has been a member of the Spanish Olympic Committee since 1984, serving as Vice-President from 1987-2001. With the Spanish Canoe Federation he was Vice-President (1988-2000), Secretary General (2000-04), 1st Vice-President (2005-08), and then President. He was President of the International Canoe Federation from 2008-12. Co-opted onto the IOC in 2011 he has served on the Women and Sport Commission (2012-14), the Entourage Commission (appointed 2014), and the Olympic Programme Commission (appointed 2014).
