Andrzej Mateja competed in cross-country skiing at the 1956 and 1960 Winter Olympics. He later worked for many years in mountain rescue services, starting his training for that in 1956 and working full-time in the mountain service from 1966-94. In his career he took part in 208 rescue expeditions and returned almost 300 injured skiiers from the slopes. In 1988 Mateja became an instructor in mountain rescues.
