Adolf Mathis was considered the best Swiss slalom skier of the early 1960s. His greatest victory came in the Lauberhorn slalom in Wengen in 1962, which, because his boots were pinching his toes, he won while wearing the Moli ski boots of Paul Näpflin, father of the later Swiss Olympic Committee President.
After retiring from competition after the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics, Mathis worked as a gamekeeper in the federal reserve of Huetstock. After his retirement, he made himself available to the canton as a game controller and was considered an expert on chamois.
