Iwao Miyajima, from the northern island of Hokkaido, started ski jumping while attending junior high school in Otaru. From there, he advanced to Otaru Commercial High School. During the preparation period in Europe, Miyajima competed in the World Student Championships in Mürren and claimed third place. At the 1936 Winter Olympics he placed a disappointing 31st. Miyajima was one of the few jumpers of the time who jumped with his arms alongside his body, which later became the standard. After World War II he competed successfully in jumping and Nordic combined in ”middle age“ division.
