Defenseman Werner Modes came in seventh with the West German ice hockey team at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics as the winner of the consolation round. In total, he earned 30 international caps, scoring three international goals. Domestically, Modes played with EV Füssen and eventually EA Kempten. He helped Füssen to win West German titles in 1973 and 1974. Modes later became a sports teacher.
