Biography

Despite being demobilised from the Army after two years National Service in August 1955, 2nd lieutenant Andrew Morgan was still a member of the Army skiing team at the time of the 1956 Winter Olympics because he was on the Army Reserve List. The son of a secondary school headmaster, Morgan learned to ski whilst serving as an officer in the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) in Austria. In his first year of competitive skiing, Morgan finished seventh in the 1955 British Cross Country Championships.

Morgan made his Olympic début at Cortina in 1956 and would take part again in the 1960 Squaw Valley and 1964 Innsbruck Games. His 41st place in the 30km in 1960 was his best individual finish. Having captured the 1956 British Cross Country Skiing Championships in Germany, Morgan followed that with victory a few days later in the 15km race at the Norwegian International Championship. He retained his British title at Winterberg, Germany in 1957. Morgan attended Clare College, Cambridge between 1957-59 as an undergraduate.
