Biography

Christian Moser was born in Carinthia and grew up in Achomitz, a small village with ski jumping hills of various sizes. He started at the age of seven and competed in his first World Cup competition in Innsbruck in January 1990 during the Four Hills Tournament. Almost three years later he earned his first World Cup points in December 1992 in Sapporo when he placed eighth, but he was only able to achieve one more point finish in that season. With only one more World Cup point finish in the next season before the 1994 Olympics Moser was chosen as a reserve, but after some very good performances in practice at Lillehammer he made the team and was chosen to compete in all three events. The bronze medal with the Austrian team was the highlight of his career and in the first World Cup event after the Games Moser made his only podium finish in an individual competition in March 1994 in Lahti with a silver. On the same day he was also a member of the Austrian team (with the same line-up as two weeks earlier at the Olympics) which won the team jumping – Moser’s only first-place finish in the World Cup.

In the 1994-95 season Moser achieved his best results in the overall World Cup (21st) and at the Four Hills tournament (25th). He also competed in his only World Championships in Thunder Bay, Ontario, but with less success. In the following summer Moser was diagnosed with anorexia and started therapy. He returned for a handful of World Cup events in January 1997 (“As part of the healing process” as he said) before retiring. Moser later moved to Vienna for business and education, and also worked for the Austrian Ski Association and coached the Viennese youth team.
