Magne Myrmo was a cross-country skiier who competed for Norway in the 1970s, appearing at the 1972 and 1976 Winter Olympics, winning silver in the 50 km at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics. He was World Champion in 1974 at Falun, winning the 15 km, and adding a bronze medal that year in the relay. His 15 km World title was historic as Myrmo won the event with wooden skis, just ahead of East German Gerhard Grimmer on fiberglass skis. The victory was the last world cross-country ski title won on wooden skis. For his victories in 1974 Myrmo was named Norwegian Athlete of the Year, and was also awarded the Olav Statuette, Trondheim’s highest sporting honor.
Myrmo had great success at Holmenkollen, winning the 15 km twice (1970, 1972) and the 50 km in 1974. In 1972 he was given the Holmenkollen Medal, shared with Rauno Miettinen. At Norwegian Championships, he won two titles, in the 1972 50 km in 1971 and the 1972 15 km. In addition, he finished second five times and third eight times at the nationals. After his active career, he was coach of the Norwegian women’s national cross country team from 1978 to 1980.
