Jon Mårdalen came from the traditional ski county Telemark, and was primarily a cross-country specialist, although he placed fourth in the 1923 Holmenkollen Nordic combined event. After returning home from the 1924 Winter Olympics, he placed third in the Holmenkollen 50 km, his best ever placing in the famous ski festival in Oslo. Mårdalen ended his competitive career after the 1926 season. His son Kjetil Mårdalen competed in Nordic Combined in the 1956 games.
