Ferenc Németh was one of the founding members of the Újpest tourist association and was involved in the introduction of ski sport in Hungary. He was not only one of the four Hungarians who competed at the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix in 1924, but Németh was the very first Hungarian competitor in the Winter Olympics. In the first 50 km cross-country race of his life, he finished 20th out of 33 skiers in equipment borrowed from other competitors, in minus 17 degrees.
Németh joined the Tungsram factory in 1909 as an apprentice and worked there untill his retirement in 1963. In 1918, after the Communist revolution, he was sentenced to prison. Németh learned carving in jail, and became a passionate carver in his later years.
