As of 2022, Herlof “Hal” Nerdal is the only person to have represented Australia in the Nordic Combined at the Olympics. Born in Norway, he moved to Australia in 1951 to pursue employment opportunities and eventually joined the national ski team, competing out of the YMCA Ski Club of Canberra. Beginning in 1959, he won four consecutive national titles in the Nordic Combined, which led to his selection to represent Australia in that sport at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics. At the Games, he placed 31st in the individual event as the last finisher. By career, he was a carpenter.
