Biography

Except for one final season (1978-79) with EV Landshut in Germany, František Pospíšil played his entire career with TJ Poldi SONP Kladno, skating with that team as a defenseman from 1961-78. With Kladno he was named to the Czech All-Star team in 1976-77, and he was given the Golden Stick Award in 1971 and 1972, given to the top Czechoslovakian ice hockey player each year.

Internationally, Pospíšil played at three Winter Olympics, winning silver medals in 1968 and 1976 and a bronze medal in 1972. He also played at 10 World Championships, winning gold medals in 1972 and 1976-77, silver medals in 1971 and 1974-75, and bronze medals in 1969-70 and 1973, failing to win a medal only in 1967. He was chosen as the best defenseman at the 1972 and 1976 Worlds, and was named to the World Championship All-Star team in 1972, 1976, and 1977. Pospíšil also helped Czechoslovaka to a runner-up finish at the 1976 Canada Cup.

After his playing career ended Pospíšil became a coach, coaching Kladno from 1979-83 and HC Litvinov in 1983-85. He became an assistant coach with the Czechoslovak national team from 1986-88. He was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999.
