From 1971 to 1983 Henryk Pytel played ice hockey for Zagłębie Sosnowiec and won four consecutive Polish titles from 1980 to 1983. Pytel played in 344 matches in the Polish league, scoring 270 goals, with him being the league’s top scorer in the 1975–76 season. After his successful career in Poland he moved to Germany where he played for EV Landshut (1983–86), Wolfsburg (1986–87), and Fronten (1987–93). In 1984 he was the leading-scorer in the Bundesliga with 52 goals in a single season.
Pytel played in 129 matches for the Polish national team from 1975 to 1986, scoring 77 goals. He competed at the Olympics in Innsbruck (1976), Lake Placid (1980), and Sarajevo (1984), as well as at eight editions of the World Championships. Following his domestic career in Germany Pytel returned to Poland in 1993 where he worked as a commercial entrepreneur. He made a brief return to ice hockey in 2004, becoming the coach of Zagłębie Sosnowiec.
