Adiel Paananen was a farmer from Saarijärvi in Central Finland. His greatest international success was the bronze medal at the 1930 World Championships behind Sven Utterström and Arne Rustadstuen. At the same Worlds, he placed 13th in the 18 km. At home he won Finnish Championships in 1927 (60 km) and 1929 (50 km) and was second in the 50 km at the 1927 Lahti Ski Games.
