Robert Reid was born in Scotland, but lived in Australia and played ice hockey for the Blackhawks Ice Hockey Club of Victoria from 1952 through 1965. As this was an era with inconsistent organization of ice hockey in the country, club championships were sporadic, but the Blackhawks did win titles in 1955 and 1965. The team also won the Goodall Cup as the best in the regional Victorian Ice Hockey Association in 1955, 1961, and 1962. Reid’s experienced led him to be selected as a goaltender for Australia’s only appearance in ice hockey at the Olympics in 1960, where it lost all six of its matches by considerable margins and placed ninth and last. Since 2008, a Best Goalie trophy named for Reid and Noel McLoughlin has been given by the Victorian Ice Hockey Association.
