Iván Ruttkay, like his siblings, studied acting as a child and appeared in plays and films. Between 1942 and 1948, in addition to his acting career, he was a speed skater of BKE. In 1948, as a member of the Hungarian national team, he participated at the European Championships in Hamar and the St. Moritz Olympics. In the latter, he finished tenth at 1,500 meters and thirteenth at 5,000 metres.
After the Olympics, he left for Sweden, where he initially worked on the catwalk, then as a factory worker, hotel porter, and car mechanic, and finally at an advertising agency. In 1955, he returned to Hungary for a short time, where he appeared again on the film screen. After 1956 he made his way to Sweden again where he worked as a graphic designer and founded his own advertising company. His siblings, Éva and Ottó, were famous actors in Hungary.
