Johannes Schettel

West German luger Johannes Schettel was disqualified after the third run at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics in the men’s singles event due to a fall. Four years later at Calgary he finished seventh. In 1982-83 and 1985-86 Schettel won West German national titles. His greatest moment came in his last season in 1989 when he made the podium at the World Championships and won a bronze medal. With the West German mixed teams he won gold and bronze at the 1988 Europeans and another bronze in 1990. In 1986 he came in second at the overall World Cup and in 1989 he was third.

As the son of a hotel manager Schettel was trained as a cook and butcher, but later owned two sporting goods shops, one in his hometown of Olsberg and one nearby in Brilon, both together with his wife, Claudia.
