Alpine skier Hansjörg Schlager finished 18th in the downhill at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. In the slalom he placed sixth in the first run, but did not finish the second run. He won West German slalom titles in 1970 and 1973. In 1970, Schlager finished sixth in the Alpine combined at the World Championships in Gröden. Schlager retired in 1976 from high performance skiing.
In 2002 he fell ill from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS / motor neuron disease) and died only two years later. Until his death he worked as a sports representor and editor for the magazine Ski published by the German Skiing Association.
