Figure skater Knut Schubert partnered Birgit Lorenz, representing East Germany at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics finishing fifth. Both also competed in the 1981-84 World Championships placing ninth, seventh, eighth and sixth. At the European Championships they earned two bronze medals in 1983 and 1984. In 1981 and 1985 the pair won two East German titles and were runners-up in 1982-84.
Schubert later studied sports science at the Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur (DHfK) Leipzig and became a well-known and successful figure skating coach. His daughter Pauline also became a figure skater.
