Howard Maidment was a regular competitor, and winner, at the Wargrave and Shiplake Canoeing Regatta on the Thames both before and after World War II. In addition to racing on his own, he often was partnered by other members of his family, in the Canadian Pairs and team events. At the 1948 Olympics, Howard finished a creditable sixth in the 1000 metres Canadian singles.
