Prof. Mircea Socolescu was a Romanian geologist and geophysicist, who studied mining and mineralogy in Bucureşti. Socolescu wrote four books and a large number of scientific papers, mainly on economic geology and applied geology, opening new options for investigating the subsoil by introducing magnetic and electromagnetic prospecting methods. In 1993, shortly before his death, Socolescu was elected an honorary member of the Romanian Academy. His friends Ion Gavăt and Toma Petre Ghițulescu, both geologists and geophysicists, were also members of the Romanian bob team at St. Moritz in 1928. This marked the first Romanian participation in the Olympic Winter Games. Mircea’s brother Gregori was the bob’s pilot.
