Ion Staicu of the Metalul I. C. Frimu sporting club was a metalworker in a factory in the town of Sinaia located in the Prahova River valley near Romania’s Bucegi Mountains. He began competing in bobsleigh competitions in the early 1950s. Also notable as a wrestling coach and referee, Staicu was a crew member of the Romania 2 sled that competed in the four-man event at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympics, finishing 20th. Active in competition throughout the 1950s, Staicu later became a bobsled coach.
