Boris Strel was a giant slalom specialist, who won that event in 1977 at the European Junior Championships. In December 1981 he won his only World Cup race, the giant slalom at Cortina. He had 23 World Cup top 10s, and also placed second at the Adelboden race in January 1981. At the 1982 World Championships in Schladming, Austria, Strel won the first ever world medal for Yugoslavia with a bronze in the giant slalom. Strel retired from racing after the 1984-85 season, and taught skiing, but his major business was in the sale, rental and service of ski equipment, a business he entered with his son, Thomas. Strel committed suicide.
