Prior to the advent of Norway’s Bjørn Dæhlie in the 1990s, Gunde Anders Svan was the most be-medalled international cross-country skier ever. Svan began his Olympic career in 1984, winning gold in the 15 km. and relay, silver at 50 km., and bronze in the 30 km. He returned to the Olympics to win gold in 1988 at 50 km. and in the relay, giving him four gold and six Olympic medals. Svan was World Cup champion five times – 1984-1986 and 1988-1989, placing in the top three for eight consecutive years – 1983-90. He won five individual World Championships: 1989 15 km.; 1985 and 1991 30 km., and 1985 and 1989 50 km. Overall he won 372 of 615 races at the national and international level from 1965-1991, won 30 World Cup races, and was Swedish national champion 16 times.
