Sprint canoeist Anita Kobuß finished fifth at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, alongside Karin Haftenberger, in the K2-500 meters. She won two medals at the 1966 World Championships, taking gold in the K2-500 with non-Olympian Helga Mühlberg and bronze in the K1-500 meters. She added a silver medal in the K4-500 meters in 1970.
Kobuß also won the East German national K2-500 titles with another non-Olympian, Hega Ulze, in 1965 and 1967, and with Haftenberger in 1968. From 1965-69 she won the national K1-500 title. In 1966, she helped SC Potsdam win the 4 x 500 meters relay title, and the K4-500 title, and also won the long distance K1-5,000 meters title.
