East German flatwater canoeist Guido Behling partnered Torsten Krentz in the K-2 1,000 at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and finished fifth in the final. Due to the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Behling could not participate. At the ICF Flatwater Canoe World Championships, he won two silver medals (1985 K-2 500 with Hans-Jörg Bliesener, and 1986 K-4 1,000), and one bronze (1989 K-4 1,000).
Domestically, Behling won the K-4 1,000 title in 1984, 1986, and 1988, the K-2 500 in 1986-87, K-4 500 in 1985-86, and the K-4 1,000 title in 1984, 1986, and 1989. Behling later turned to coaching as a youth coach at his home club SC Magdeburg.
